ขมิ้น (Curcuma longa) เป็นพืชสมุนไพรที่มีเหง้าเนื้อสีส้มเหลืองอยู่ใต้ดิน นิยมนำมาใช้เป็นวัตถุดิบในการปรุงอาหาร มีสรรพคุณเป็นยารักษาอาการ ท้องอืด จุกเสียด แน่นท้อง ท้องร่วง รวมถึงมีฤทธิ์ยับยั้งเชื้อแบคทีเรียที่เป็นสาเหตุของโรคท้องร่วง จากการศึกษาฤทธิ์ทางชีวภาพของสารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมิน (Curcumin) ที่แยกได้จากขมิ้น ภายใต้ทีมวิจัยของ รศ. พญ. วีระนุช นิสภาธร และคณะ พบว่า สารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมินมีฤทธิ์ยับยั้งเชื้อปรสิต Acanthamoeba triangularis ซึ่งเป็นเชื้อที่ก่อโรคในสมองและกระจกตาของมนุษย์ โดยเชื้อดังกล่าวสามารถพบได้ในแหล่งน้ำตามธรรมชาติ ติดต่อเข้าสู่มนุษย์ได้โดยตรงจากการสัมผัสน้ำที่มีการปนเปื้อน นอกจากนี้ยังพบการติดเชื้อ Acanthamoeba spp. ในผู้ที่ใช้คอนแทกเลนส์ เนื่องจากเชื้อดังกล่าวสามารถยึดเกาะกับผิวคอนแทกเลนส์ได้และนำไปสู่การติดเชื้อที่กระจกตา ซึ่งงานวิจัยภายใต้ทีมวิจัยของ รศ. พญ. วีระนุช นิสภาธร พบว่าสารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมินมีฤทธิ์ยับยั้งการเจริญและลดการเกาะติดของเชื้อ A. triangularis บนผิวคอนแทกเลนส์ นอกจากนี้การแช่คอนแทกเลนส์ในสารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมินช่วยป้องกันการเกาะติดของเชื้อบนผิวคอนแทกเลนส์ ซึ่งพบว่าเชื้อ A. triangularis ที่เลี้ยงในสภาวะที่มีสารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมินสูญเสียโครงสร้างเท้าเทียม (Pseudopodia) ซึ่งเป็นโครงสร้างที่ใช้ในการเกาะติดพื้นผิว นอกจากนี้ทีมวิจัยของ รศ. พญ. วีระนุช นิสภาธร ยังศึกษากลไกการออกฤทธิ์ทางชีวภาพของสารสกัดขมิ้นและสารบริสุทธิ์เคอร์คูมิน เพื่อเป็นการศึกษาเชิงลึกและยกระดับสมุนไพรไทยสู่สากล

Turmeric: Thai medicinal plant against parasite
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a Thai medicinal plant containing orange rhizome. Turmeric is used as a food ingredient in Thai foods. The plant has been used to treat flatulence, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea. In addition, the plant extract possesses antibacterial activity against diarrhea caused by bacteria. Assoc. Prof. Veeranoot Nissapatorn and the team have been reported that turmeric extract and curcumin demonstrated anti-Acanthamoeba activity against Acanthamoeba triangularis, causative agents of human Acanthamoeba encephalitis and keratitis. The protozoan is found in nature such as water. It can be transmitted to human through contact with contaminated water. Besides, the infection caused by the parasite is usually found in contact lens users. Corneal infection is occurred due to adhesion properties presented in the organism. Assoc. Prof. Veeranoot Nissapatorn and the team revealed that turmeric extract and curcumin showed anti-Acanthamoeba activity and anti-adhesion activity against A. triangularis on the contact lens. The pre-treatment of the contact lens surface by the extract and curcumin also reduced the adhesion of the parasite. It has been highlighted that A. triangularis trophozoites treated with turmeric extract and curcumin have lost strong acanthopodia, thorn-like projection pseudopodia (false feet). Moreover, the in-depth details on the bio-activity of turmeric extract and curcumin have been further investigated by our research team to provide insights into their mechanisms of actions against the parasite.
